The start of this project came from a set of photos I´d taken of transport, which was the initial idea. This, however, broadened into “journeys”; I began to research photographers who had looked at journeys and how they captured it, the motion of the journey or the place they were in, etc.

The first was David Bradford, who´s work consisted of photographs taken from the inside of a NY taxi. Some of his photos are experimental and some are quite perfect, capturing the place, buildings, structures, etc in a beautiful way; all of his is quite classy, in my opinion, because of the black and white photography. I planned to take photos on any journey that I regarded of interest, new/ beautiful places, places that were of reasonable distance. I then took three sets of photos leading up to the main point of my project. Two were on college trips; one to London and one to Brighton, both to galleries. The aim with these photos was to capture the place, which was a main theme throughout the project and what. I believe, is a purpose of photography.

I then planned to take photos during my time in Florida; my initial plan with these was to take experimental photos, using “guessed settings” and not looking through the lens in the hope to capture something I may not have chose to capture by looking. These were more successful than I expected them to be. I also took more perfect photos, which, in my opinion, were better. I also decided I would not delete any of the images, and wait till I returned to decide on their success. This helped because some of the photos I may have chose to delete, and they´d actually turned out well. These, in my opinion, were similar to Stephen Shore´s work, who is my favourite photographer and the next one I used in my research. His use of colour was the main aspect of his work I was interested in, but also the American-ism was an obvious link.

During the snow, back in the UK, I took two sets of photos. These also focused on journeys but from a different viewpoint. The first was from inside, looking out onto the snow, watching the cars in the snow, footprints formed in the snow, etc. The second was watching icicles form over the week, viewing them on their sort of “journey”. I had a third set of photos in the snow, these combined ideas from the snow photos and the Florida set. There was two sections to these; one of which focused on the journey from the viewpoint of inside the car, looking at how the snow affected the journey, the places, etc. And the other focused on people, mostly people on foot, how their journey was affected, etc. I then looked at the work of Andrew Bush who photographed people on their journeys, inside of their cars.

I then experimented with text, to go with my photographs. This came from watching the film “into the wild”; it was said, of Christopher McCandless, that he lived his life by quotes he´s read or heard, the film itself had many beautifully put quotes and others from other work. I looked at the text from this film and collected things which I thought worked well with my photos, from other sources, too. I first put the text on top of the photographs, this was not as successful as I´d hoped, the text itself I think worked with the photos selected, but the way it was carried out didn’t. To continue with the use of text, I researched Richard Longs work; his use of nature and the text that accompanies his photos – the text used, and how it is presented. I also looked at post secrets and Sophie Calles work to help with these experiments. I then tried projecting images onto the text, this was by far more successful in my opinion.

I made and ordered a hardback book of photos taken over the project; I felt that this was the best way to display them. I thought that my project, somewhat, dealt with the purpose of photography – to take photographs which show off the subject/place as best as possible, visual communication, to show someone a place that they may not visit in the best way possible. By putting my best photos into this book it shows off the contrasts between places, seasons, etc and shows them off in the best possible way, in my opinion. Overall, I believe this project was successful and I think that was the best way to end the project and sum it up. If I had more time on this project I would like to continue with the ideas stated, the purpose, I would like to experiment more with colour and new places.
